Internet service provider in Scotland

May 27th, 2014

Hello here !
Well, i’m a french student, and i come to Glasgow tomorrow. I will rent a flat and I will take an internet acces.
I wonder what is the best ISP in Scotland ? Is it difficult to get an internet acces ?
In France, you just have to call the ISP, you give your adresse and your BIC, and 3 days later you receive your internet acces with your modem. I’m afraid they will ask me to give some proof of address, take a commitment or others justificatorys…
Thanks.

You’re quite right to be afraid. You’ll find that the ‘Auld Alliance’ doesn’t grease many cogs in 21st Century Glesga, mon amis.
Shop around for the best deal in terms of fee vs download limit. It’s unlikely you’ll get anything other than a 12 month contract, you’ll most likely be asked for a deposit, and line rental will cost you ten quid a month on top of what they quote you (unless it specifically states ‘line rental included). The very best of luck in getting connected any sooner than 3 weeks.
I should really throw in some free advice about Glasgow (or Glesga, as the natives call it.) Some ‘Do’s and ‘Don’t’s for when you arrive.
Don’t worry if the sky seems really low and grey – that’s normal.
Do have a pint of Belhaven Eighty Shilling at the Beer Cafe on Candleriggs.
Don’t worry when the locals growl at you in a bizarre and unintelligible manner; they’re probably being friendly.
Don’t converse about religion (or ‘football’ as the locals refer to it) for any reason. This is for your own safety.
Do go to a chip shop anywhere on Sauchiehall Street and order a ‘pizza supper’. You’ll love it. Ask for broon sauce.
Do have a Glasgow Shower
Don’t accept a Glasgow Kiss.
You’ll be fine. As long as you’re still alive after a week, you’ll be fine.

Virgin media is the best ISP if you are in a cable area.

see if your local exchange is enabled with my ISP

Just put your phone number in to check.
I have been with them donkeys years with ADSL 2+ Annex M connection, I think new people are tied to shortish contracts, whereas us older members are on a one month rolling contract from when they opened.
Otherwise, you can go cable.
It may be worth seeing if you can get BT infinity
