Installed xp. mouse pointer doesn’t move

October 10th, 2013

just installed xp after file corruption.
mouse pointer doesn’t move.
usb mouse is detected, but doesn’t move
keyboard works fine.
old dell laptop.

Answer #1
I run into this problem with usb mice all the time. When you boot the system with the mouse plugged in, it wont move, but if you unplug it and plug it back in after the system is booted, it will work fine.
Does the mouse pad on the laptop work? You might need to download drivers for it since it is XP.
Answer #2
Generally speaking it should work out of the box. But this is very unlikely but your mouse might need different drivers (Which i doubt). Do what SmAsHeDr suggested and you should have no problems.
Answer #3
the mouse laptop doesn’t work also. it’s on screen, but i can’t move it. i know the touchpad works because when i rebooted the first time, it moved for about 2 seconds then stopped. then when i rebooted again, it just didnt work anymore

Did you install your chipset drivers?
Answer #5
yes. from a xp live cd, mouse pointer works
Answer #6
Press Winkey+R>devmgmt.msc>Mice and other pointing devices (navigate with tab/arrows) and expand it by pressing + (plus)
After selecting the mouse,Press ALT+F,Navigate to Action>Uninstall and confirm,Restart afterward,That should do the trick,Hopefully.
Answer #7
there should be 2 entries under “Mice and other pointing devices”
is there ?
the touch pad work with the mouse disconnected ?
if Roberto400’s suggestion don’t work try installing the Touchpad software from you lappy’s support/downloads site

the built in touchpad. i’m not using a usb mouse. keeps cutting off and on. have to reinstall driver everytime to get it to work again.
Answer #12
I suggest you use the following Linux LiveCD to determine whether this is a software or hardware problem:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/live-cd/pclinuxos-lxde-2011.09.iso
Burn it with imgburn (using the “write image file to disc” option).
Answer #13
i'm not using a usb mouse.
OH !
try installing the Touchpad software from you lappy’s support/downloads site
post the lappy’s model number if you need help finding it
Answer #14
okay i’ll try the linux. i found the drivers for laptop already.
Answer #15
Did you install your chipset drivers?
have you done this one
delete all temp files
hit winkey+R and type
%temp%
and hit enter to get to temp folder
or try this if you can disable the touchpad in the bios
install, then uninstall the driver
reboot to BIOS and disable the touchpad
boot to desktop
reboot to BIOS and re-enable the touchpad
boot to desktop
do you get a new hardware found and the driver installed ?
seeing you’re using XP you can also try a repair install
seeing it works with a live CD I don’t think it’s a hardware problem
I think it’s some type of file corruption

it’s a dell d610. i got the driver from dell for the touchpad. but everytime i reboot, the touchpad doesn’t work. everytime i reinstall driver, it works. website http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D610
btw it doesn’t show in mouse and pointing device. tried out usb mouse, and usb mouse shows
Answer #17
and usb mouse shows
and works ?
you may have a loose connection between the pad & the mainboard
but
everytime i reinstall driver, it works.
till you reboot, no problems ?
which says driver confusion
you delete your temp files & folders
you could also try deleting your prefetch files in the windows folder
btw it doesn't show in mouse and pointing device.
even after reinstalling the drivers ?
anything under HID devices (Human interface device) in device mgr ?

I can’t remember exactly, but last time I re-installed Windows on an old Inspiron 8600, there was a seperate ALPS driver for the touchpad, and another ALPS driver for the Glidepoint (in the middle of the keyboard) – maybe this combination is causing issues ?
I take it you are using your Dell service Tag to grab the downloads ?

says same as mine,
so try a “install from a specific location” driver install and uncheck “show compatible”
then try a micro$oft PS2 or USB mouse driver
in device mgr, what’s under “Human interface devices”, you could try uninstalling all mice & “Human interface devices” drivers and reboot
