Which Windows? Try replacing the dll file.
Download kernel32.dll from here and copy it into the game folder http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?kernel32

As i know it is true because game engine requires minimum directx 10, on xp maximum is directx 9…..
I got the same error when I tried to run it in Windows XP…I had No problem running it in Windows 7 x64…

why do people still use XP for gaming?
Audio has had problems with onboard ones, try a dedicated card and turn off onboard

No, XP is not supported, minimum is Vista with SP2.
