How to convert mkv 720p ac3 movies to apple tv player?

Hi
Going absolutely mad after getting an apple tv 2 for Crimbo!
I have been using a WDTV to play mostly mkv 720p ac3 files and want to convert them to h264, mv4, m4v or whatever the hell will play on the apple tv.
Have posted a load of stuff on other forums and not getting anywhere
Have trid to use handbrake, mkvtools, mkv2vob, and a bunch of other programs.
Have tried looking here for apple tv movies but only a couple of threads.
I am using windows 7 so can convert rewrap using iflicks etc
I think but not sure I will only have to change the ‘container’ to mp4 from mkv but how to do this is driving me nuts.
This apple tv malarky is the worst thing i have ever tried to sort out so please anyone can you give any suggetions on exactly how to do this and please dont just say…remux them, or use this program etc.
really need some help here as been trying to sort for days now

The most simple way is probably to install XBMC on your Apple TV. Then you won’t need to convert anything.

Yeah i think your right but…..
the is only a tehered jailbreak out htere for 4.4.4 and……
I cant find a flippin micro usb anywhere in the house, which ive been turning upside down!!! ;0
Have found 11 mini usb but not the flat one, will order one now

Mkv2vob might work.
Otherwise I would suggest a good easy to use converter…Freemake Video Converter..

Use plex, you’ll need to jailbreak, but it’s way easier to use than xbmc.
