@: ur kinda wrong in a big way. You CAN convert a 700mb into a 4.37GB Mkv. All it takes is a format conversion. The only thing is, you won’t gain any video quality gain. It’ll stay just the same. The only thing that changes is the video container. OP is not asking about compressing. He’s asking about upscaling a DVDrip to HD (720p or 1080p). Compressing is reducing in size. Different thing.
@OP: Upscaling is something pretty much all standalones players do on their own via some sort of algorithm. DVD’s use in general a resolution of 576p. While those algorithms will make it look the same on a big screen TV without pixellation becoming too visible. It is and always will stay 576p, because that’s the source resolution. 576p can’t “magically” convert into 720/1080p. Theoretically you can do that by adding black borders arround the video till it fits the 1280/720 resolution size (720p) or 1920/1080 (1080p), the video material itself will still be 576p. All you’ll have done is add some black borders to make it APPEAR to the player as HD, the video material won’t be though.

@ your right but it also depends if he is watching it on his tv or on his pc… on his pc yea sure you can prob have no problem but if hes trying to convert for his 50″ tv b/c his bandwith is so slow 4.37gb takes to long to download then its a diff story

A 700mb DVD rip will yield little if any improvement to picture quality. If you’re working with a 1:1 DVD copy, you can get good results upscaling to 720p or 1080p. I recommend Mediacoder or Tmpgenc Video Mastering.
Another option is using something like Splash Pro Ex, which can noticeably improve picture quality in real time while you watch the movie. It works really well if you’re watching a Bluray rip.
