Hosting Minecraft Server and Media Server

July 25th, 2016

So I have a desktop that I converted into a media server. I assigned a static ip and set up port forwarding so that I can access it from anywhere that I have internet access. One of my close friends asked me if I could host a minecraft server for him and I just want to know how I could continue hosting the media server and host a minecraft game from the same server. If it isn’t possible then could I host it from a Model A Raspberry Pi running Debian or does it require more storage space? If it is possible then how would I go about separating the incoming traffic?

If the media server and minecraft are using different ports for connection to their clients, it’s not an issue. But the ‘feeling’ on the gaming server depends on your bandwith to the internet. Even if you have a Intel Core 2 Duowith 3 GB RAM the game could be very laggy if your internet connection is low.

Thanks for the reply. My connection is good enough to host a small server of about 10 people and I only planned on having 4-5 people on it anyways. It only lags when I’m downloading software so I just inform the people on it that they may want to get some sun while I’m downloading. I’m probably going to upgrade the ram to 8GB when I get the money but since I can’t do that just yet I’m going to try to increase the size of the swap partition and hope that helps the only other issue I’ve had and that’s lag when displaying lava. I’ve only played Minecraft once or twice so I’m not sure why that would cause lag but apparently it does. Anyway it works now so thanks! I’m surprised that at 5mbps download and 2mbps upload it’s running this well but I’m not going to question it.
