Help Me Explain “Ska”

Ska (pron. IPA: [skː]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was a precursor to rocksteady and reggae.[1]
Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bassline, a scratchlike tempo, accented guitar or piano rhythms on the offbeat; and in some cases, jazz-like horn riffs. In the 1960s, ska was the preferred music genre of rude boys (although many ska artists condemned the violent rude boy lifestyle). Ska was also popular with British mods and skinheads, which led artists such as Symarip, Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker and The Pioneers to aim songs at those audiences. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three waves; indicating a revival in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and another revival in the 1990s, mostly based in the United States.

Most answers here and all of the specific examples provided are wrong. But classifying music is difficult.
Ska is a very raw sound and was popularised by UK skinheads circa 1968. It predates Reggae and certainly was long before Madness, the Specials etc.. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Hippies or synthesisers
The line between early Reggae like Desmond Dekker, Pioneers, Upsetters, Dave & Ansel Collins etc is very blurred, because Reggae evolved from Ska and some artists had evolved with it.
The latter ‘resurgences’, mid-70’s on do not typify the SKA sound and that evolution is more properly described as Two-Tone eg, Madness, Specials etc.
SKA typically follows a very simple rythym, with a less exagerated bass than Reggae; prominence being given to the vocalist and the brass section. I dont think it is possible for a white vocalist to emmulate the genuine SKA sound.

I’d say it was cross between Punk and Reggae.

*Madness: Yes, Madness is ska. from the second wave. Great band, saw them in 2006!! By the way, they covered some great nummers of the inventer of Ska: Prince Buster (for example, one step beyond, and also the song Madness is from Prince Buster)
*About the first wave: because reggae involved from ska, the old ska numbers does sound like reggae sometimes. *Saying that Ska is a cross between punk an reggae is not correct. You are talking about ska punk (which is a cross between punk and ska of course).
Ska Punk is the ska from the third wave. However there are also ska bands from the third wave that did not play ska punk. The Slackers for example.
*Saying that ska is for white people is totally wrong! 1. the origin is Jamaica. So not white
2. the second wave, form the UK, with skinheads and so (like you can read in other posts) was the music of the rebellion of the hard workers in the factories then. White and black people worked in those factories together, and they made the music together. A lot of bands from the second wave had black and white people in the band. Why do you think that the black/white chess board pattern is the typical symbol for ska?
the third wave just used these symbols again, and for some reason, skaters do the same (maybe because ‘ska’ is in ‘skater’).
The third ska wave is over, that’s what music specialist say. So I guess we are in the fourth wave now? The ska scene in Europe is doing great, and J-ska (japanese ska) already conquered Japan and is also taking over the world (Tokyo ska paradise orchestra!).
There are a lot of small groups in Europe playing ska and ska punk. Ska is hot in France too (Babylon circus, La Ruda Salska,…).
And recently, the Spannish group Ska-P anounced their comeback, and Ska-P is just the best ska punk group ever!!!
Ooh, another famous ska band from the third wave: No Doubt (the early years).
And I also forget Sublime. Very famous in the US.
Answer #16
In the beginning: Laurel Aitken, the Godfather of Ska.
The greatest ska band ever: The Specials
Listen to these two and you will know exactly what good ska music sounds like.

Answer #18
