Yeah disconnect the hdmi cable. The moment you plug it in it sends the signal from the laptop screen to the tv and blanks out there laptop screen.

Look in your graphic card settings. It is now set to “clone”‘ you want to use the “extended desktop”‘ then you have two screens and can drag different windows on the the screens, including using a media player on the other screen while surfing the net on the first screen etc.
fn + f4 on most laptops will give you the option of changing your outputs. Set it to Extend Display. If that doesn’t work, you’ll have the option in your display settings.
