Hard Disk in RAW format.

August 4th, 2016

Hi,
I’ve just bought a WD mybook 4TB
Now I’m copying files to back it up in that HD.
After a short while of copying, it stalls. The LED stops blinking and remains solid on the HD. After copying a file or 2, the speed drops to 0bytes/s and shows the error.
It says ” An error has occured. The destination you have specified does not exist. It might be offline network location or an empty CD or DVD drive. Check the location and try again.”
I can see the contents of the HD, its displayed in my computer and the cables are not loose. Hard Disk Senti says there is no issues.
Tried copying on both USB 3 and USB 2 ports. Same issue. Tried using teracopy, it says the Device is not ready. AV is switched off.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: when I try to format, it says windows is unable to complete the format.

Answer #1
I don’t have a clue, but is it formatted correctly?
Answer #2
have you tried changing the drive and copiying to other drive?
Answer #3
Its brand new, already formatted to NTFS by default. Will try formatting again.
@: What do you mean? I’m copying files from my old HD to the new HD.
Answer #4
After I try to format it failed. Now everything is in RAW format. Can’t access the file nor reformat it.
Now it says whenever I plug in the HD “You need to format the disk in drive J: before you can use …” Now the Hard disk senti says health 16%. HELP!
Answer #5
I was thinking of problems that can happen with drives above 2TB but I think that only applies to internal drives mainly.
Can’t see that anyone has had problems with your drive in the reviews..
Best to try using and formatting on another PC or laptop to see if that works..
I have a very temperamental external, but it’s a portable and it suffered power usb power probs early on..
Answer #6
I couldn’t format using the default windows tool. Now I’m trying file scavenger.
I actually don’t need any files inside, I just want to access it again.
Answer #7
Use diskpart ash, I know you know how to do that, type show disks then enter, select disk * then enter (* being the external) , then type clean then enter again, confirm yes. The drive should now show as unallocated space so you can create a new partition.
If you don’t get anywhere after that its warranty time.
Answer #8
I’ll post back how it goes once its done. Thanks!
EDIT: Diskpart did the trick, I can access the drive once again. But while copying files from my old HD to this one, it was copying fine for about 10 mins, then suddenly it says device not ready. back to square one.
Answer #9
Maybe you should send it to repair – sounds like it’s defect
Answer #10
Yep, I have to do a RMA.. Will see how it goes when I send it in to the warehouse
Answer #11
UPDATE: I received it back today, working great!
they shipped it from Penang, Malaysia. It’s a different disk, diff serial no and the warranty restarts for another 2 years
