Graphic Card Memory help

I just bought a new PC that comes with this GTS450 1GB. the problem is, when I play GTA4, in the settings it says i only have 989mb of graphic card memory. This didn’t sum up, 1Gb is equals to 1024mb, where did the other 35mb go?
And, is this GTS450 a good graphic card? how do i take care of it?

It’s because GTA IV leaves a bit of VRAM spare for headroom, my GTX 260 appears as 839MB’s instead of 896MB’s.
The card will need a dust off from time to time, and good airflow, but that’s about all you need to do to look after it.
