GPU PROBLEM? in-game

February 1st, 2020

SSD problem? Atleast i think its the SSD, when in certain games it will “Buzz” every 1-2 seconds and the game will lag during that buzzing sound… any info?

“Changed to GPU Problem”
Radeon R9 390x 8GB

There have been reports for SSD buzzing, especially for Samsung ones, however it could be your GPU too, where is the SSD connected to? If you can, use a linux live cd which will not use the SSD to see if the noise will occur then, also try stressing the SSD with either CrystalDiskMark or AS SSD Benchmark to see if the problem will occur then.

Doubt it’s the ssd. Check temperatures to start with. Something might be overheating.

samsung 850 series surely had serious firmware problem but the thing is ; ssds can not make sound like standard drives due to their technology. even if they do , i doubt firmware can fix it. just open your case and focus when you hear the sound to see if there is anything on the loose ; especially a second standard hard drive if you have it.
you can also try the software jack said or you can simply find a 4-5 gb video file and compress it with winrar then extract it again. it will cause enough load more than any game can does. if there is no sound , either sound is related to other hardware or the problem is specific to a game due to some bad coding for example.
if none of these can help you then i suggest you to take a look at this topic , they are mainly complaining about stuttering which is equal to what you say lag. and found solution after firmware update.

if you decide updating firmware , this is the direct link for samsung utility mentioned on the topic. keep in mind firmware update always carries risk of losing files. i did many times with ocz ssds and nothing has ever happened but you can not be sure.

I already updated the SSD Firmware yesterday, took off my case and checked the buzzing and it SEEMS to be coming from graphics card. the weird thing is. its not overheating and its only on certain games. (quite a few but not all games do it) and its not WHILE actively playing the game. for example. Latest game and the game im testing it on currently is Warface. It buzzes during the lobby and has 1-2 second lag spikes each buzz. while in-game and actually playing, no buzzing, no lag.
Temps
CPU> 37c
HDD> 36c
SSD> 36c
GPU> 55c
using google to look into this further.
EDIT:
After using google I didnt find much helpful information for my specific problem, maybe someone else would have more luck. I tried tinkering around with the GPU settings to see if anything was causing it but yet to come to a solution.
I did notice however, that Activity went from 0% to 100% instantly while on that menu, i will test another game to see if it works the same with another game!
EDIT 2:
Using the same game, i tried searching for a match. which actually takes me to a training room while searching for a match. to my surprise it lags. also i tried windowed mode and going to another screen and while on that other screen. The buzzing is gone but the game is still having its lag spikes.

whats the brand of the gpu ? you said solely said 390x , is it reference design ? what you hear is probably coil whine which generally happens when load on gpu as well as the speed of fan increases , search with that term “coil whine” . but it doesnt explain the performance problem you are suffering from since it is just an annoying noise issue not a performance and there is no other solution for it other than changing the gpu.
whats the name of the game you are trying ? many new games uses real time backgrounds not just a static background picture for main menus so if vsync is disabled and there is no fps cap in the game ; then your gpu load will be %100 cuz it will be trying to produce the greatest output it can.
those lags you mentioned on multiplayer mode can be related to connection or server load also not solely gpu. amd’s new crimson drivers had too many problems , it can also be related to it if they still are not fixed. if you tell me brand of gpu , game you mention also driver version of crimson then i can check a little further.
Answer #6
I presume what you hear is the GPU fans being set to 100% when you enter the game, and then the settings click in properly and the fans slow down to the normal speed. I had the same thing with my old Radeon, but I forget what causes it with out researching it.. If you research increased fan speed and your GPU you will probably see why it does it…

It’s not the fan.

Game: Warface, but it happens on a few others that i cant recall atm and it seems to only do it during the lobby of the game. must be a game issue?
Answer #8
unless the problem becomes widespread and serious , it is better to assume like that or as a driver problem. i checked noise issue or coil whine for your specific gpu but there was only a few so not a significant problem for this specific model. every single model of gpus have similar a few posts by users when you check it. also i checked if there is a bios update for your gpu to find out there is no bios version available at all on product page. powercolor is cheap compared to other amd gpu manufacturers but since they are small company , you cant expect the best support for firmware and things like that.

Happens on my i7 lenovo on metal gear solid V. changed the settings and still got it. didnt happen too often so i just played through. Great game, BTW. Chalked it up to coding (sorry coders…errhum..scapegoats… ) Prolly a hardware issue, TBH.
I get worired these days of voltage regulators… I hear a little sizzelin’ sometimes on a different machine (i5 lenovo). It’s subtle but it sure doesn’t sound right.
Edit:
Colud it be a harware monitor poling a stressed core (used in-game)? Just remembered running HWInfo64 during gameplay. Noticed that HWInfo64 did in fact pole a core up to 45% on that i7 every few seconds. Will try it without the monitor and see if it helps….

I mean the whole computer isnt even a year old. so I think it’d be unlikely to be a hardware issue but possible, i have had another issue with my GPU and dual monitors, however using a new cord fixed that! so idk.
doesnt happen on 95% of games. honestly cant even tell you what OTHER game it does it on, so i may even be mistaken there.
