Good AMD cpu to unlock to quad core!

January 3rd, 2014

Anyone know a good AMD cpu that I can get any easily unlock to a quad core? I am trying to build a good cheap gaming system! Trying to stretch my money and I want a AMD cpu that people have been having good luck unlocking! THANKS!
Answer #1
For most games, the CPU being used isn’t nearly as important as your video card.
Getting a decent dual core CPU with a good video card > Getting a good quad core CPU with a decent video card
Answer #2
Dual core cpu’s will bottleneck most modern graphics cards in most modern games nowdays.
Answer #3
So you think a Dual Core would be fine? And just get a good graphics card? I heard the AMD Semprons are easy to unlock!

That is not true at all, why are you making stuff up?

Unlocking cores or cache is not 100% success and even after unlocking you might find that it has a bad core and hence will be forced to ‘lock’ it again. I have a Phenom II X2 555 which I have unlocked to X4 and OCed to 3.7GHz.
Although now that the price difference between the dual and quad has been narrowed, I would recommend that you don’t take a risk and get a Quad. Get a Phenom II X4 955 or 965 and it has an unlocked multiplier so OC it
BTW AMD FX (Bulldozer) processors are to be released on October 12th and are even cheaper than we thought! Eight-core FX-8150 and FX-8120 will carry pricing of just $245 and $205, respectively. As for the six cored FX-6120, that is expected to come in at $175
Think about waiting as these might just be as good as they are expected to be and even if you cant afford it, then too there’s a buzz about price corrections across the board and even other CPUs might get cheaper.

So you’re saying that an i7 980x with a gtx 580 would not perform any better than a dual core cpu in modern games that use 4+ cores (i know that the 980x is a 6 core)

Are you really going to compare $1,000 dollar processor to a dual core CPU? Your a waste of life man, go learn thing one about computers then talk to me.
You have completely changed your argument.
Bottom line, you got no idea what your talking about, and should not be giving incorrect advice. A new (quality) dual core processor will not bottleneck on games, the GPU will bottleneck first.

Bulldozer seems like a juicy option, although if you still want to unlock something.
Get a newer motherboard 990FX or 970 and 1866Mhz memory.
Use a Sempron 140 (higher unlock rates) or 145 temporarily and fork the cash when you feel bulldozer is affordable.
Since a Sempron 140 is only like 45 bucks, you wouldn’t even cared if it died.
So if it doesn’t unlock well, you can just stretch its legs a bit by overclocking it.
Fun starts with spending as less cash on it as you can.
From then on, you can learn a thing or two.

I was referring to quality dual core’s like the i3-2100, not AMD dual cores, those are crap, lol.
Thank you for backing up my point, quality dual core better than crap 6 core, lol.

The ‘quality’ dual core was able to give average 68.1 FPS and a Quad Core was able to give 85.8 FPS
i.e. 17.7 FPS or 25.99% LESS FPS than a Quad Core
The ‘quality’ dual core was able to give minimum 57.0 FPS and a Quad Core was able to give 75.0 FPS
i.e. 18 FPS or 31.58% LESS FPS than a Quad Core
A major difference of 25.99% and 31.58% will all things equal is what is called as “CPU Bottleneck” by the technologically erudite.
Even the experts agree if you were to read the fine print below, “There’s a huge drop in performance between the quad-core i5-2500K and the dual-core, Hyper-Threaded Core i3-2100 at the same clock rate”.

why not buy an APU? AMD A-Series are good start

You can highlight anything you want, the AMD Phenom X6 1090T is one of the best processor AMD makes. I am only more satisfied to find out that Intel’s Dual Core performs better than that, especially with a minimum of 57 FPS.

That was NOT the question. You said, and I quote, “Bottom line, you got no idea what your talking about, and should not be giving incorrect advice. A new (quality) dual core processor will not bottleneck on games, the GPU will bottleneck first.”
Which, I have proved above that cores do make a difference, and quite significantly I might add. I proved that a ‘quality’ dual-core (as per your call) is still considerably slower than a quad-core. And thus the statement that a ‘dual core processor will not bottleneck on games’ is, with all due respect kind Sir, incorrect.

roll on the bulldozer they will be one of the best processors of the next few years untill ivy bridge comes out with their massive price tag!
