Getting data back after reinstall

Ok heres my problem.Im working on my bosses pc and im not sure if they reformatted the hard drive first before they reinstalled XPProfessional.I want to try to recover any files that were on it before the reinstall is that possible to do?I thank you for any help given.

no reformatting means nothing is left, you can back up your files in a external hard drive though. Also there is a option only to format C drive (or other drives) if you use a bootable CD

a quick format is the easiest to recover data from. almost any of the undelete programs out there will work. Most of the trials will only let you se what it can recover or let you recover a little bit before buying. I recommend you download a few and see what they will recover before you purchase.

Sure if that program can recover stuff after a reformat the police would have a easier time
