Game Causing PC to Power Off [Solved]ish

October 22nd, 2013

A game I just installed (Tropico 4) seems to cause my computer to completely power off when I attempt to adjust the graphic settings. I haven’t attempted to play on the low settings as I should not have to use those.
Another odd thing, I have to either wait a while to be able to turn it back on, or I have to unplug/plug it back in. Not sure if that means anything.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 3.5GHz
GPU: Radeon 6850 1GB DDR5
PSU: 700w
RAM: 8GB
If I need to give more info, let me know. Thanks.

Answer #1
What PSU do you have?
Also, have you ran any benchmarks/stress tests on your CPU/GPU for stability?
Answer #2
700w PSU
No I have not yet.
Answer #3
Overheating?

No. As it happens specifically for this game only. I can run World of Warcraft on Ultra for hours and hours and…hours without any issues.
However, with this 1 game, as soon as I go into the visual settings…BAM! Power Off.
My temps for CPU range from 25-35c

Just ran everything. Tests went fine. Flying colors on everything

WoW is crap game, you can play it on a single core with one of the oldest GPU’s around, lol

Sounds fishy, just editing the settings? You’re sure your graphics drivers are fully up to date? Is the game up to date?
Explain power off? Your computer is running and then everything goes black? You look down at the lights on your computer, all off? No power on anything?
Or does it restart?
I really think you should run a stability test on your CPU and GPU. Monitor your temps during the stress test.
PS: You should also post full specs, including original frequencies, and overclocked frequencies. I don’t even know what processor you have based on the poor stats you posted. If your at a loss to what you system is, use something like Speccy or PC Wizard.
Answer #6
You could try disabling the “auto shutdown on system failure” (or whatever it is) upon boot by mashing the F8 button and then selecting that option.
Then, boot up Tropico 4 and make it crash or wait for it to. If successful, you should get a BSOD with an error code you can google.
To me this looks like a graphics card related issue. Probable solutions are cleaning dust off it, or updating drivers etc.

Yes and no. I had a dual core comp with a garbage GPU came stock with the computer I bought last year, that computer on lowest of the low settings got 15-30 fps.

Got the game off of this website, it may not be up-to-date, but as it isn’t legit, cannot update. All drivers and DirectX are 100% up-to-date.

Literally…the best way to explain it is: Computer running fine…BAM! No power. If I press the Power button on the tower, nothing will happen unless I unplug & plug the computer back in.
SmAsHeDr replied: I really think you should run a stability test on your CPU and GPU. Monitor your temps during the stress test. I use Everest and I ran a Benchmark test. My temps at max load on the CPU went up to 50c. However the game does not put my CPU anywhere near max load. Temps are not an issue. I can rule that out.

I will look into the feature you mention disabling. As for the dust & drivers, there is not 1 speck of dust inside my case and drivers are 100% up-to-date.
Thank you for your patience with me thus far. I would like to play this game and I appreciate your help everyone.
Answer #8
As 4zb41 mentioned, we need your error message to know whats causing it.

That’s the best place to start.

No.
Brand of PSU is Rosewill.
Answer #13
Your PSU is the issue, it looses power under pressure
Answer #14
Apologies. Thought it was Rosewill, it is Rocketfish.
EDIT: However, I would believe that it is the likely culprit now. Just looked at some reviews and they are terrible.
Though I’m very confused as to why it is just this one game and not general PC use. Because even when I load the game on minimum graphic settings the PC powers down if I even click the “Options” menu.
Answer #15
Does the PC shut off completely or is the fan still running and monitor is off,,,, If the pc shuts off all the way, your psu is not delivering enough juice.
Answer #16
PC shuts off completely.
Answer #17
I think I may just delete the game. It’s the only thing on this computer that has any trouble. And I can’t seem to figure out why.
I guess I’ll mark this solved =/
