downloading help

Hi, I just bought a new Macbook and I’m new to the mac realm. I’m trying to use to download some of my favourite tv shows, however i’m having a hard time opening up the rar files. I’ve installed several different rar decoder programs but everytime i try to open it i get a msg saying the file is not supported. Please I hoping someone can help me!!
