downloaded games

when i download games off the internet usually via rapidshare, when i install them and then play them it all works fine and runs smoothly for the most part, the game works and doesnt crash.
However, every 3 or so minutes the game starts to run really badly – still working, just really slow and the framerate drops dramatically and after a while – say 3 minutes it goes back to running fine and then the process repeats (after 3 mins it starts to run badly again).
This only happens with games i download off the internet and not when i buy games from the store as they all work perfectly.
can anyone tell me why and hopefully offer me a solution? it would really be appreciated!!!!

Two problems that pop to my mind are:
1) Your PC is over heating, check the fans, if they work properly, etc…
2) The power supply isnt giving enough power to run your RAM/GPU/Fans (which could lead to over-heating).
I am not too sure about these, but checking them wouldn’t harm.

Ok i have checked and my fans are all working and the PC is definatley not over heating, but why would that only happen with games i download off the internet?
Games like COD4 which i have bought run perfectly fine, while half life 2 which i downloaded from rapidshare has the problem i explained in my post.
