Is your drive formatted as ntfs or ext2 or ext3 file system. If it is formated for linux than try these program for reading files http://www.fs-driver.org/

You could try downloading ubuntu and running it (it has a live CD function) to see if it will open the files first. If it works, try transferring the data from the drive to your windows 7 drive using ubuntu, or any linux distro.
Ubuntu can be found here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Alternatively use Puppy linux, (A dedicated live CD OS) found here:

His drive is probably corrupted maybe ubuntu cant read files, try to use some data back program if that can help but i think that you will need to reformat drive.
