Can’t run disc clean or defrag

I can’t run either disc clean up or defrag for my C drive
Keep getting this error message
disk cleanup can not clean up Drive C
Make sure that there is a disk in the drive, and that the drive door is closed
any ideas why or how I can fix it??
I suspect its connected to somehow having 2 x copies of Windows XP loaded onto my laptop and only one version works??????
If anyone can tell me how to get the dodgy version of XP off would be good too!!!

If it says Make sure that there is a disk in the drive, and that the drive door is closed are you sure you are not doing it to your disk drive rarther than your HDD?
