Buying a PSU

April 27th, 2018

I’m trying to buy a PSU I have a 250w and I’m going to buy a 500-550 one for my HD5770. However I can’t find a PSU that looks like its going to fit. I’ve looked at some and the PSU fan is either going to be blocked by my computer case as its stuck on the top. The PSU I have now the fan is at the back of the case
I was wondering if this one was any good, but I’m quite scared as its not even a brand and might not even work.

You can install the PSU upside down if you want to. And that PSU is crap.
What is the rest of your specs?
Answer #2
How much are you willing to spend on a PSU? These Antec ones have a lot of good words said about them. http://www.anandtech.com/show/3985/three-550w-psus-for-different-prices/14

Then wouldn’t the fan blow hot air onto my card. The PSU is already upside down. Can I install it the upright so the text on the side is readable and isn’t upside down?
My current PSU looks like one I linked but it’s only 250w, It just has a fan at the back.
and looks like that

PSUs never blow air into the case. They exhaust air out.
This is the cheapest PSU you could buy. If you want more watts you need to pay for it. This PSU would be plenty for your rig + the 5770 though

My psu is like that. The ones I can find look like that would be blocked by the roof of the case and if I turn it upright it would have a fan blowing on the card, you get what I mean.

Like I already said. Fans inside PSUs never intake air into the case. They will only exhaust air outside. In case you didn’t understand. The red arrows here show the direction of air. All PSUs are made like this. Turning the PSU upside down doesn’t reverse direction of airflow. Airflow is controlled by the direction of rotation of the fan inside the PSU not the PSUs orientation

Take that one for an example, there doesn’t seem to be a fan on the back to push the air out? and say if I got that one would I be able to place it the other way around so that the fan is facing the bottom?

Wouldn’t touch a Cit PSU with a bargepole. If you must go cheap, then try this unit. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/430w-corsair-cmpsu-430cx-builder-series-80-eff-120mm-fan-single-12v-rail-atx-ps-2
it will supply ALOT more power and handle your HD5770 alot better than that terrible one in the post above. .
Oh and install it with the fan facing downwards so it’s not against the roof.
Answer #9
Okay? so can anyone explain how the fan inside the PC works, since there no fan to blow it back out?
Also what brand names are there?
Also the PSU you guys are posting are below the system requirements for the HD 5570

Don’t worry about the fan on the PSU, it’s not really important whether it draws air through a bottom fan, or with a fan at the back. The heat will escape perfectly fine with both methods.
The HD5570 only needs a 400w power supply according to the AMD site.
There’s a list of power supplies at the link below.

[edit] I noticed you said 5770 and 5570, if it’s the 5770 then it needs 500w.

That’s actually a 380W PSU relabeled as a 430W. The Antec I’ve posted above is far higher quality for a few more
Answer #13
So it doesn’t matter if the fan is outside or inside? Heh, you learn something new everyday.

Do you have a source on this? Can’t be bothered looking into it.
The corsair is rated for a stable 430w continuous power. should actually be capable of a fair bit over that. while the antec was rated for 380w continuous.
The corsair unit has a single 12v rail and the same tweaked seasonic solid design producing more amps than the antec. The antec relies on a combined 12v and comes up short of the corsair in the amount of amps it can produce. Not sure how they compair noise wise etc but seems you get a bit more bang for buck out the corsair unit here.

I would take his word for it.

Review of the EA380D (basically a OEMed Seasonic S12II 380W)

The corsair is rated for a stable 430w continuous power. should actually be capable of a fair bit over that. while the antec was rated for 380w continuous. It’s got 28A on the 12v rail. The exact same as the Antec and that’s where the trouble starts
The corsair unit has a single 12v rail and the same tweaked seasonic solid design producing more amps than the antec. The 430CX is CWT DSA not Seasonic. The Antec however, is Seasonic.
The antec relies on a combined 12v and comes up short of the corsair in the amount of amps it can produce. Not really. Single rails aren’t really the best nowadays
Can't be bothered looking into it. And that’s exactly what your problem is

Oh that power supply, I remember that one of the customers had one and it overheated. It wasn’t just that, the cables were so loose that you can pull it off the board.
