Basic/Quick question about HDMI cables.

September 7th, 2013

Simple question : Is there a difference between a cheap HDMI cable and others expensive ones ?
I saw some engineers saying that HDMI cables are all the same, the cheaps ones are cheap just because they probably last less time. And I saw another engineers saying that the expensive ones are obviously better in terms of the image quality.
So…are the exepensive ones better or they are all the same?

Answer #1
No, they’re not better in terms of image quality.
The most important thing you have to pay attention to is the HDMI standard version, apart from that, there’s not really any difference.
What this means in practice: Expensive cables do not provide some magical upgrade in image quality. However, digital cables are not necessarily a dichotomy of “it works” and “it doesn’t work”. There’s still shades of grey.

I see, so the 1.4/1.4a are the best version out. This says it all. Thanks for the help.
Answer #5
Please note that this doens’t mean you should buy those labelled as “1.4”.
Cable manufacturers are officially prohibited from marketing the cables by HDMI standard version (for instance "HDMI 1.4 cable"); the cables are distinguished by bitrate support only.

Answer #6
Ok, I have one but I have no Idea what is his standard version. But If I need a new one Ill get a 1.3 then, seems very reliable and supports the full resolution of my television.
Answer #7
They will all do 1920 x 1080 @ 60hz
Your TV wont display at a higher res than that so you are fine.
Only if you have a screen over 1920 x 1200 or you have a 3d screen do you need more.
Answer #8
Get expensive only if you wish to connect it to sth at a long distance (more than 3M).
Answer #9
sometimes. I recenetly purchased 3 from ebay and they are useless always buy from a trusted supplier. One of them has problems with stuttering audio and flashing screen. One had an issue with the colours and would randomly go cyan/pink. and on another the picture was super grainy and would keep flickering. But im sure if you buy for example a £10 belkin there will be no difference compared to a £70 monster at the same length. Hope i helped
