Avi files on dvd-r problem…

October 31st, 2013

Dunno if anyone has had this same problem, but its just a recent problem for me…
I have burned a handfull of avi’s onto a disc (Verbatim -DL) and when i try to play them from the disc my playback is jumpy, but it cant be the disc or the files because when i copy the files back to my hdd they play fine.
Any idea what i could do to help this problem.. i cant see that its my dvd drive becuase i have 2 and it does same in both, and its only a recent problem.
Any help will be great.

Answer #1
Try burning the disc at a slower speed and if that doesn’t correct the problem, try using a different blank media.
The maximum speed of the disc/burner isn’t always ideal and/or you could have bought some defective discs.
Answer #2
but if that was the case, why would the files be fine and un-jumpy once copied back from dvd to hdd?
*edit (this DL dvd was burned at 4x which to me is quite a slowish speed anyway isnt it?)
Answer #3
Try a normal DVD r. Not a dl DVD
Answer #4
doesnt fit on normal -r
would have thought with using verbatim i wouldnt get any problems.
Answer #5
What are you playing them on?
Note that playback is HARDER then just copying off – the computer has to decode the video stream to display it.
Maybe a combination of slowish processor and slowish dvd speed could be the culprit?
Answer #6
I’m playing them on my desktop PC
(Dell Dimension E520 – Intel(R)Core(TM)2 CPU 6300@1.86GHz – 2048MB Memory)
It’s never had this problem before.
Processor doesnt seem to be straining while playing the files (maybe around 9%).
Tried it in both my dvd drives (Optiarc 5260S) and (LG GSA-H31N)
Answer #7
I don’t know the optiarc, but the lg should be up to the job (good drive that one is).
So, to recap:
good drive
good disc brand
medium speed burn (this is a myth actually, modern drives and discs are optimised for max spped or max-1 speed. (x16 or x8 is best, x4 or less just wastes time)
mmm thoughts:
did you do a verify on the burnt disc?
does the disc play OK in another computer or on a dvd (avi capable) player?
does the avi file play OK from the hard drive (indicates a disc to computer problem.. I/O errors maybe.. DMA issues?)
9% cpu use – should be OK
What graphics has the computer got..b uilt in or dedicated?
What media player are you using. Try a different one (MPC HC – give it a go).
Answer #8
Fluffbutt replied: I don't know the optiarc
Sony Optiarc are one of the best IMO (formerly NEC) – nearly every optical drive I own is one
@ uberman – Can you just clarify this – are you burning the avi’s onto a data disc, and if so, what program are you using ?
As previously mentioned, .avi’s will be a bit “laggy” when you try to play them directly from a data disc on a pc, rather than playing them directly from a hard drive.
Answer #9
what OS are you on ?
in device mgr check under “IDE/ATA controller” to see if the channel the drives are on is set to “DMA if available”
do the disks that used to play OK still work ?
