You could try handbrake or Freemake converter and convert them that way.

Well the best way to search on this site and I guess other sites, is to put XviD after the name you are searching for.
(Xvid is the codec and avi is the container it most commonly uses)
Converting? Probably the simplest of all is Freemake Video Converter.
(When installing, use custom install so you can decline the adware crap!)

Remember though, that avi stuff is only in Standard def and the best quality will be that of a DVD.
It normally will not use 720p or 1080p.( So if you convert from HD file, you will end up with SD)
To play HD on your TV you could stream it from your PVC video card via HDMI or DVI.
Or get yourself a stand alone media player, which can be a simple media player or a full blown Smart device.
Here is just an example of a simple one..

Searching eBay etc will give you lots of options.
For instance, you could get into an Android with KODI

Use xmedia recode to “copy” the file. It takes like 30 seconds depending on file size. I have tried many diff conversion methods and this is by far the easiest and fastest. It doesnt convert it totally taking hours it changes it to whatever works very fast and is same quality as you downloaded. First you install the freeware software and select what you want to convert the file to(.avi in your case). Run the software, of course. Open the file and go to the video file and the will be a drop down that says convert. Drop it down and select copy. Then go to audio and drop down where it says convert and select copy. Make sure if you hit the filename in both sides(source and output) of audio and video to make sure they both then say copy. Then if you are sure it looks good, hit the add to queue. Then hit encode and it will do it within 30 seconds or so depending on file size. It will tell you when complete. Then open the destination folder(can select where it sends the finished file) and try it out. Easy Peasy! I have only seen a few movies that would not work this way. Also, I have not tried any other format to start with than .mkv so this might be moot if it does not work with whatever file type you might grab. Good luck!

Use xmedia recode to "copy" the file.
Good idea when you just need to change the container, such as going from mkv to mp4 but keeping the same H264 encoding.
But to go to avi from mkv or mp4 will need a change of codec to XviD .
So if that is the case you will need to do a full recode.
You can still use Xmedia recode

i have a few android devices running kodi however getting it to stream to another screen always prove hard used to use a vga cable but no sound as you know
im going to have a go with freemake and see how we get on ill update this post
Answer #6
Do you have the option to upgrade the TV?
If so, then you may be able to update the firmware and be able to watch other formats, since its a firmware issue or codex files in the TV. Check with the manufacturer.
Answer #7
Upgrade firmware I’ll look into in the meantime I converted a movie using freemake it’s did it successfully however it’s recognised as unknown format. Is there different types of avi? Because I have a movie that plays so I need them to be that format so kinda lost here
Answer #8
With Freemake, after you select ‘Avi’, select ‘TV Quality’ as the preset (Xvid, mp3)..should work. If you pick the others you could end up with an unsuitable codec such as h264.
That should do it !
If you still have probs, look at a good file that works using Mediainfo then copy and paste the results here on the forum.
