Anyone use a Raspberry Pi with XMBC ?
August 7th, 2016
Is a Raspberry Pi with XMBC better for playing movies?
i would get a sumvision player mate. just load up a 1tb drive with films and you are good to go. much better option. been getting all my mates onto it.
Firstly I try not to use anything Western Digital, it’s almost inevitable that they will fail.
I do have a Raspberry Pi and I have used XMBC on it. It depends on your setup, but once everything is installed and ready to go it’s perfect. The menus can be a little laggy and large HD videos do take their time to load from the network – but it’s all understandable and not too much.
It depends on your budget and where all your movies are though really, but the Pi is good. Even if you don’t end up using it as a media centre, it would still be a good buy
never used a Raspberry Pi device – unsure what it actually is.
I have however used XMBC and gotta say, it’s awesome! you’d be better too if you owned a debrid account so you can stream HD content.

my solution is the easiest and cheapest. ive been using this method for years, playing 46gb remuxes. never had a problem.
you can also take the player when you go out, as its only the size of 2 matchboxes.

A Raspberry Pi is basically a bare bones credit card PC that runs Linux. It was designed to make it easy for people to get into programming, but people have found loads of uses for them because they are so cheap and small. All the information is on the website, but they are quite powerful considering.

I’d recommend anyone looking at one…

To be honest I’ve only just looked it up. I didn’t realise how cheap they were. It does look quite attractive.

The benefit of the Pi is that you can make it do a lot more and it will play from the network, but it does take more setting up and it’s more expensive. So it depends on how tech savvy you are and what you actually want to achieve.
i use my PI for everything lol its duel booted with a few OS one being raspxbmc its it does a amazing job
Well I have tried most media players that I can get hold of and I keep coming back to XBMC on my Raspberry PI. It streams off the internet without much delay (sometimes a little buffering is required depending on the sending server), and it plays everything I throw at it almost instantly from a MacMINI disk on my network. I bought the whole thing complete with software already installed from http://auseparts.com.au for under $100. This setup has all the addons already installed as well as the repositories for many hundreds more addons. Getting preinstalled and setup has saved me countless hours of work. I use a ethernet wired connection as the WIFI can be a tad slower. You are gonna find it hard to beat this price vs performance in the Raspberry PI.
The one I have on my spare tv is still going very well. Playing all media content is just the very most basic thing it does.
OP I had your dilemma a few months back and started doing some investigating. So…
First of all, your WD TVHD can’t play video files with DTS. It simply is not supported even with the latest firmwares so you can either keep it or buy a different like the ASUS oPlay I have. It is, however, DLNA enabled, which is a great plus.
Secondly you don’t need a raspberry pi. With a UPnP streaming server on your PC connected to your router and your media tank connected also you can stream anything from your PC to it. Third, if you go for the PC software server, then you can either get one (for free) that transcodes the files (needed for the WD TVHD) or one that doesn’t (oPlay or a raspberry). For the former I reccomend KooRaRoo Media Server and for the later XBMC. Keep in mind that you’re not going to have a very powerful xbmc tool with a media tank since it will only server to strem contents from directories of your server.
Now lastly, if you are on ambitious son of a gun you can do what I’m going to do and make an old PC into a NAS server with ownCloud and XBMC (and a few other things) and get a raspberry pi to serve as the player receiving content from the NAS server.
Cheers
