Alternativ til Raspberry pi?:D

August 4th, 2016

Hello lovely W-BB_:D
Im looking for the best way, to get XBMC media center on my tv.
Raspberry pi is working okay, but a bit slow.
Do u have an idea to an alternative, to the raspberry pi.
Wich do u think is the best media center.?

Answer #1
Pivos xios running linux and xbmc as been pretty good servant to me so far.
Answer #2
Yeah that looks okay..
but im thinking a bit cheaper than that?
Answer #3
sumvision connected to hd, is easiest and cheapest solution.
Answer #4
Well, the RaspPi option was the cheapest. I’m assuming you already have some kind of network access to your media files?
If you got an old computer you don’t use anymore, you could use that to install XBMC on (the Ubuntu/Live version, it’s just install and go). You might need to upgrade the Video card, It doesn’t have to be the best, but one with HDMI output will be needed for a bit of quality.
You could also get a 100/200 Android box/Mini-PC and install XBMC on that, but I’m not sure how XBMC runs on those boxes.
You could also get all components for a HTPC and build a custom PC for 500 (probraly a bit less).

I already got a raspberry pi, but it cant stream HD videos.
Answer #6

like i said. just hook up a sumvision player to hd. it plays everthing, even remuxes.
Answer #8
Got to agree with sustanton250, the Sumvision has played everything I’ve ever thrown at it, and for 20 to 30 quid (depending whether you want 8gb storage) its cheap.
Answer #9
My raspberry pi runs Debian Wheezy minimal 107 MB base and after boot only runs on 7 MB of ram. Plays everything. This is on my secondary tv. Used a lot by the kids. Never had any need to check out overclock. I got my Wheezy image from here http://www.linuxsystems.it/2012/06/debian-wheezy-raspberry-pi-minimal-image/
The official Wheezy image from Raspberry pi is also good….runs in 20 MB of ram after boot. My primary tv has a mini pc case that has Debian Linux with dual TV tuners that I built very cheaply from bits and pieces. it also plays everything.
For me, it is not enough for a tv box to just play video and audio. Any basic media player can do that. It must also do everything that a desktop computer can do.

why do you need a pc setup running through the tv, if all you want a media player to do is play films? sumvison is much easier and cheaper.

#1 I like to put the family in front of the webcam to communicate with oversees relatives.
#2 We like to be able to quickly check our email on the tv in a small window.
#3 We can settle a bet instantly thru google or any other
#4 We can watch youtube on the big screen
#5 We can take a snapshot and send it to the printer
#6 We can bring up an instant imdb link if we don’t know what the film is about or the actors
#7 I can keep an eye on the kids internet activities in a corner window
#8 Every single device in the house is linked, content can be streamed from everywhere
These are the main reasons, there are more

Raspberry pi $40
Debian nini pc was even less
If you know how to plug in power, connect lan cable and usb devices, you’re good to go. All peripherals are wireless. Setting up surround speakers was a little more difficult

#1 I like to put the family in front of the webcam to communicate with oversees relatives
i have console and laptop for that. my family can use webcam whilst the rest of us watch a film. we can also do this with our phones, which is sometimes much more convenient.
#2 We like to be able to quickly check our email on the tv in a small window.
haha what? thats what smartphones and laptops are for.
#3 We can settle a bet instantly thru google or any other
quicker and easier with smartphone.
#4 We can watch youtube on the big screen
my console and tv box can do that and i can control youtube on my phone like a remote and play it on my tv easily.
#5 We can take a snapshot and send it to the printer
why? and if i wanted to do this, i can do it wirelesly from my phone or ipad.
#6 We can bring up an instant imdb link if we don't know what the film is about or the actors
eh? so you stop a film just to use imdb..? i just use my phone which is in my lap. #7 I can keep an eye on the kids internet activities in a corner window
constantly monitoring their internet whilst trying to watch a bluray? big brother anyone? weird. i just set up the proper security on any pc they use.
Every single device in the house is linked, content can be streamed from everywhere
i can do all this to, with console and pc. not beeing rude, but those reason are really strange. all i’m saying, is that if you just want an easy way to watch films, get a sumvision. you can also loan it friends and family and take it away. this alone, makes it better imo.
Answer #13
^ I can also do all this with a smartphone or tablet, but it is far more satisfying and logical on my huge screen tv, unless I need to do something private. It is also hard to squash in the whole family in front of a phone or laptop to use the webcam with my family comfortable in their seats. The webcam takes in the whole lounge. We can also see the whole family we are speaking to comfortable in their own seats of their lounge. There is also the little matter of the dolby surround sound and when I have the whole family in the lounge or a large number of visitors this is the ONLY option. Are you really comparing the quality of my tv screen and audio with a smartphone or laptop ? I do everything including record tv programs with 1 remote control and I can even split my screen into many different screens. The imdb link comes up automatically when i query the movie title, I don’t type anything. How can you say googling is easier thru a smartphone than a pc type setup ? As for streaming, all the wired computers in my house now run on Gigabit lan speed so copying files onto usb drives is not so important any more. I used to buy media players a while ago, but not any more, it must be the full package now.
Now…..One question for you…….Do you own shares with Sumvision ?
Answer #14
i can fit many people un front of my ps3 to make video calls, and trough the desktop is fine in the office.
why split tv into screens? and why the hell do i want imdb on the screen when watching something? that silly. and i dont want some sort of computer setup on my tv, i have ipad, netbook and phone in living room for that. that way, i can watch a film whilst others do other things. why would you want everything condensed onto one unit..? what if you want a webcam chat, whilst someone wants to watch a bluray and someone wants to print something off??! doesnt make sense.
sorry, buy your setup and the reason for use are not practical and are a bit outdated tbh.
and if you read op, he is looking for an ALTERNATIVE to pi.

Oh well, here’s some Sumvisions that might interest the OP…

That is not your business to say. Did I criticize your setup ? That is not my style. My reasons for my setup make a lot of sense to me, but you have a lot to learn about humility, understanding and tolerance. FYI you made 2 separate posts in quick succession about Sumvision….this is called spamming and also why I asked you if you have shares in Sumvision. This reminds me of the child who spits the dummy until she gets what she wants. I don’t mind the Sumvision, but I need my devices to do more, and please do not spam this point

and if you read op, he is looking for an ALTERNATIVE to pi.

My first post gave OP 2 options…. 1.A better OS for the PI (Debian Wheezy) as he was thinking of overclocking the PI….Cost = $0
2.Recycle an old computer into a media center…..Cost = varies but generally $0 depending on what is at hand
