Am3+ motherboard

September 3rd, 2013

i just purchased a MSI 970A-G45 motherboard for my bulldozer 6 core. i read just review that i need to flash the bios to get it to work with the bulldozer. But i got mine from fry’s that has a sticker on it say “Supports AM3+ CPU with New Bios (B2 Stepping ready)” what is this mean?
Answer #1
I think it should be right..But when you fire it up then you can check that you have at least F6 bios.

MSI 970A-G45 had the same issue with their boards being sold with old bios and not compatible with AM3+ processors. When I received my board I was very relieved to see a sticker added onto the box that read " Supports AM3+ CPU with new bios (B2 stepping ready)". Boards manufactured before 09-30-11 will likely have bios issues with Bulldozer.

Plain and simple you need to flash bios to version F6.
Clearly stated on Gigabyte's site.=red text.

It means just that,It doesn’t get more obvious,For the record,You have an FX series CPU,Not an AM3+ one.
Refer to the following CPU support list:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/970A-G45.html#/?div=CPUSupport
For the record,If it currently doesn’t support your CPU,You’ll have to replace it (unless you get an older CPU to use for updating it)
A motherboard usually won’t post with an unsupported CPU (there are rare cases when it will,But 9 out 10,Not gonna happen)
Answer #3
So, that means i have to update the bios by myself??
anyone have instruction how to flash the bios?
do i have to use older cpu to install windows, then flash newer bios??
then replace the new bulldozer to install windows again to get it to work??

i think all the fx series cpu are am3+? mine is am3+..
it does support mine “FD6100WMW6KGU”
I just want to know “Supports AM3+ CPU with New Bios (B2 Stepping ready)”. does that mean i have to flash newer bios are not?

Yep,Your right,I got the series & socket confused,My bad.
dartore replied: it does support mine "FD6100WMW6KGU"
Of course,But that’s not the point,It’s only supported from BIOS v1.2 and above which means that if your
board currently has an older version in place,It won’t fly.
dartore replied: does that mean i have to flash newer bios are not?
It depends^,First you should determine whether this panic is justified or not by hooking
up the CPU & The rest and see if it boots,If it doesn’t,You got your answer. As said before,If it’s not supported,You’ll
have to get the motherboard replaced and hope for the best,Or update the BIOS using an older CPU (if you have one that
is,Don’t invest any money on it),I can make you a boot cd that will update it if needed.
Edit: I just realized that you ordered it but haven’t received it yet,Guess you’ll have to wait n see

Sorry to mislead with the post before, turned out to be a Gigabyte mobo !
That compatibility list says it’s OK for the Fx CPUs and appears to give a zip file link to the bios page.

Answer #7
You’d usually flash the bios to the latest anyway, these days its easy and no risk whatsoever.
Answer #8
if i am building a new computer, how can i flash to a newer bios? i have all the new parts..
does i uses all the new parts including the bulldozer to test it first?
if it doesn’t work and use my older cpu, do i have to install windows 7 to flash to a newer bios?
thanks.

Bios flashing can be done during booting, this is the most preferred method as Windows flashing came after this.
You used to have to use a floppy disk, but now you can just use a USB stick.
If the bios doesn’t have a dedicated built-in bios flashing tool (which I doubt it), you build a bootable USB stick.
Just try on the new parts and flash it, can’t kill anything.
Answer #10
how do i make a bootable usb stick to flash it?
can you give me a tutorial?
sorry, never been this before.
yeah, i will. i just making sure. so i dont have to wait for respond later.
thx

Other instructions come with the bios.
It sounds like your board will be good to go, anyhow..
Answer #12
I made you this boot cd to make it easier:
http://www.mediafire.com/?niciiogx41j3rnj
It’s fully automated and includes the latest bios.
Just burn it with imgburn (using the “write image file to disc” option).
Answer #13
thx guys, i will check it out tonight. thx!
Answer #14
MSI has its own built in “M-Flash”.
Just plug in a USB stick with the bios file unzipped and placed in the root directory.
Plug in the stick and boot the system and enter M-Flash and choose the USB stick.
Answer #15
Hey guys, i dont need to flash newer bio, its all set everything works. Thanks
