1080p Video file on 1080i TV?

Hey, if I downloaded a 1080P video file and played it on a 720p/1080i HDTV would the file play? I know a DVD player wouldnt display 1080p or a PS3/360 in this resolution wouldn’t either but would a video file on a PC be able to scale slightly down?
Just want to know before I attempt it. Cheers!

Well, the answer to this is pretty short. Yes.
It’s just a different resolution. It’s not like it’s a diffent filetype or anything…
