.DAT video file?

August 1st, 2016

I’m trying to get some video out of a website, so I waited it to finish streaming and checked the temporaries.
It brought some “.DAT” file, which I don’t know what it is.
Inside the temporaries folder itself it wrote .WMV, but it still showed as a .DAT file and there’s no playback from different players as well anyway.
What is this and how can I get a normal video from this?
I prefer not to screen-capture the video from the website as it usually yields bad resulsts.

dat files (that are video files) are mostly Video CD files
they are in mpeg format and should play with most players

Something is strange with this thing.
I tried several stuff from the internet. First, some said just to play it with Media Player, which obviously didn’t work.
Something else said to extract it with “ISOBuster” – Didn’t seem to work.
Another one said to open it with some converter I forgot its name (it has a download thread here with 500 comments) – It said that it doesn’t contain video data or something like that.
Eventually, I tried to record it with Camtasia, but it doesn’t record anything. When it shows the recording preview it only results in a “hole” that the background can be seen through.
The file is obviously this but I can’t seem to get it to work, and when it can’t even record it while I obviously see it, it’s very strange.
Answer #4
Have you tried it with vlc though?
Answer #5
I just tried and it doesn’t work.
And it’s not like it was specifically about this file (I guess), because the player doesn’t even have a .DAT in it’s browser so it’s most likely not intended to play these files.
What’s up with this stupid thing? I just need a short video, it should be really easy.
Answer #6
Try removing the .DAT and rename it to .WMV
