Triple Core vs Quad Core?

August 5th, 2016

I’m building my friend a budget computer less than 400.00 dollars. Basically we got everything except the motherboard. We are looking at AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition 2.5GHz and the MD Athlon II X3 445 Rana 3.1GHz since they are cheap and in the same pricing range. My friend play computer games like World of Warcraft, Silkroad, etc. the Quad-Core is 10 dollars cheaper than the Triple-Core. In fact I know that Triple Core is a Quad Core with a core disable. I know I have to unlock it with a motherboard bios or something. What is your thought?
Answer #1
4 is better than 3!
Answer #2
Neither. Get the X2 550. The unlocking rates are higher with those
Answer #3
9850BE is pretty high-end. Better than the Athlon, I’d say.

I have to agree on that one. If your going to cheap out, a Sempron 140 has pretty high unlock rates.
Answer #5
You can get the 550 at Microcenter with a free motherboard for like $90.
Answer #6
Quad-Core is better!
Answer #7
If its for your friend… just get him the quad core. Sounds like he’s not super tech-savy and there is no need to throw a triple core at him while unlocking the core and overclocking the cpu… blah blah blah.
Spare him the tech jargon… toss him a reliable and fast PC & he will be your client for life.
I say… Quad Core.
Answer #8
yep go for x4 995BE
Answer #9
the triple core is basically a quad reject
they won’t pass quality assurance test because of a low quality core
that’s why one is disabled
Answer #10
Well, the ‘Phenom 9850’ is $10 cheaper than the ‘Athlon II’ because it’s not a Phenom II and runs at a lower frequency. It’s from the first ‘Phenom’ series.
You’re asking about the CPU, but say you have everything except the motherboard.
On your budget, I think the Phenom would be more suitable, on a ‘AM2+’ motherboard with DDR2 support.
