How to surround subtitles with opaque box

Hi there
I have created (srt) and (ssa) subtitle files for a movie. I need to know how to surround the subtitles with opaque box (preferably the box should appear only when a subtitle appears)
I have tried Aegisub but couldn’t figure out how to do that.. any help with any program would be highly appreciated
