how to convert dvd files into some other format

i have a movie which is 4gb,i want to convert them into other format to small size ie avi or mp4 or mkv or someother,so which format gives good clarity and which software use to convert them,experts tell me

Depending on how they are encoded i’d say mkv, then mp4 and lastly avi. Mkv will give you the biggest file, so i’d suggest mp4. As that can give you a smaller file than avi, but better quality.

Handbrake will convert your vob to either mkv or mp4.
Within the setting you can tell it was size you like it to be. But you may have to play around with it, until you get a size and quality you’re happy with.

.mkv and .mp4 are containers and both most commonly use the H264 codec.
So both of these files can be virtually the same size with the same quality which is determined by the settings for the H264 codec..

.Avi is also a container and is commonly used with the DivX or Xvid codec..
These codecs don’t compress so efficiently and require about twice the size of an H264.
If you look at movies that have been uploaded in standard definition (from DVD rips), you will see that many of the .avi (XVID) types are 700MB file size, whereas a DVD rip .mkv(H264) may be 350MB !
When you are encoding, it pays to be somewhat generous with bitrate to keep the quality, particularly if you are using these one click wonder converters!

I use xilsoft converter which works just fine…. anything to anything (seemingly)
