How do I convert DVD to avi format?

I’m new when comes to high tech, so please be patient.
I have a DVD movie that is about 4 gb, how do I convert this to an avi format that is only 700 mb?

Use VirtualDub to convert to AVI. But you’re better off converting to H.264 using Handbrake. Better quality.
