July 31st, 2016

Hello,
I have 4K videos which i have to convert to 1080p, i would like to know if the quality gets better and sharper when converted to 1080p?
Thanks

It all depends on the codec used and the bitrate allocated to the video.
In general, yes, down-sizing a video tend to drop any jaggies and hot spots, pixellation around curves, etc.
It can’t make poor 4k into excellent 1080 (although it might improve it a little, depending on just how poor the 4k was)
Why don’t you experiment?
Either clip out, or find online, a short section of 4k and convert it into 1080 using different bitrate and program. It should only take 30-60 secs to do a 1 min video.

Why would a better video that is downgraded be a better picture??
R U saying, will my 1080 be better with a original 4K?

In a sense, it can, rarely.
It’s like taking my 20 Mp image from the camera and resizing it to 16 MP – the image loses some texture smearing and some jaggies around contrast changes. But – the con side of it is that you do end up with a small picture…
It’s unlikely to happen with video – the motion component throws a loop into things.
But – a 4k video scaled down to 1080 does look better than the same view filmed in 1080. That was widely discussed on the photo forums when the 4k digital cameras came out, mainstream, in 2014.

A simple question deserves a simple answer. NO!

Provided your player can handle a 4K input (eg. PotPlayer, VLC, or a suitable stand alone), you can play them as they are.
The output res will automatically adjust to suit the monitor (1080p). Giving a good picture!
Answer #6
Actually i want to convert it to 1080p because i am doing a video montage in 1080p. I have mixed videos. So i have to convert it to 1080p.

it is impossible that quality gets better in your case.
there is another thing if it can seem better to eye even if quality is degraded ? i cant talk certain for it but i dont think so. some of friends has told that there is a possibility so it may be but i think the opposite. even if there can be cases of it , it wouldnt be related to resolution but other elements such as contrast.
the only cases i prefer lower resolution to higher one are the ones where UI elements gets so small and there is no option to increase their size. most common in games. other than this i can not see any way for choosing 1080p over 2160p or how it applies to a video.
