You’re thoughts on this System Build.
August 8th, 2016
They plan to use the system for burning music maybe movies i wanted to get them something that would last.
So heres the build i did.
Anyone feel they can build a better build for $610 or less that would be good for burning movies and music.
This will be my first Intel build too by the way..
Burning movies / music, internet, office-like apps – the most simple system will do. i3 instead of i5; no need for a liquid cooler – unless they are planning on overclocking or playing the latest games (and with the onboard Intel graphics – not happening).
Have to say prebuilt desktops offering what you have put together here go for $550 with a better motherboard and more ram. For example (and I don’t know what country you’re in – Canada myself) – memoryexpress has a system for $550 with:

Do note that the HDD also has a promo code (EMCXSWM22)
Not sure how much $ it takes off as they don’t specify, But you’ll find out soon enough I guess!
Anyways, I added cable ties as the PSU isn’t modular and in similar to your build, I added a 3rd party CPU cooler too (Air cooling is good enough, And the one I picked is pretty quiet!) Also, As you can see, The RAM I picked doesn’t have gigantic heatsinks (Which is a good thing as it can cause clearance problems with large CPU coolers) Anyways, The CPU is a fairly recent dual-core and is a solid performer (It’s not as powerful as the i5-3470 obviously, But for general use it’s perfectly fine!) Overall, My build will save you a significant amount of money and your parents will not be disappointed!
Edit: Just in case your wondering about the PSU’s efficiency , Here’s a review:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Antec-VP450-Power-Supply-Review/1487/1
The only reason it’s not 80PLUS certified is because it lacks Active PFC (Which is a requirement) but other than that, It has very high efficiency (And stable voltages too!) so it’s all good.
Motherboard is very pricy & putting a micro atx in an atx case doesn’t make much sense. Liquid cooler is overkill because you qill be crippled by the lack of a ssd.
Speaking of which get a 128gb ssd even if it means cutting the ram down to 8gb and getting a b75 mobo

Not a good prebuilt if you ask me.
DDR3 1333 instead of 1600, Crappy small case which is quite lacking in available 3.5″ drive bays
and has poor ventilation, Generic PSU that can probably fry it all someday and to top it all, Only 1yr warranty (Which is certainly not good enough) you get much better warranty when you build it yourself!
(and I don't know what country you're in - Canada myself)
He’s from the states. While Newegg has the same item codes on both sites, it certainly doesn’t have the same prices (And I did check up on a few of em just to be sure)
Motherboard is very pricy
It’s a combo deal (Motherboard+CPU) so it’s not “pricy”
It’s very clear to see to be honest.
putting a micro atx in an atx case doesn't make much sense.
I disagree. Midi-ATX cases are generally more spacious (good for upgrades) and have better ventilation, So why not? Just because the mobo is M.ATX it doesn’t mean you have to put it in a M.ATX case!
Liquid cooler is overkill because you qill be crippled by the lack of a ssd.
I can only agree with the highlighted part (As air cooling is sufficient and can be quiet as well)
But I just don’t see the correlation between the choice of CPU cooler to the lack of SSD!
Besides, An SSD is more of a luxury than a must-have and this is a low-budget build. For the home user, It’s mostly just a few seconds less loading time here and there, Nice to have, But nothing critical.
even if it means cutting the ram down to 8gb and getting a b75 mobo
Either your extremely tired or you need to get your eyes checked!
His build contains 8GB (not 16) and it in fact does include a B75 mobo.
Remember …. this is a computer for the very basics. Any computer that is 5 years old can do what is needed.
FIRST: Decide what you want to do on your computer.
TWO: Price out what you need to accomplish #1
THREE: Is there anything you might want to do?
FOUR: Price out how much more it will cost.
FIVE: Decide if the extra cost is justified for the “mights”
Just a comment on the SSD discussion: I know it seems like a luxury, but have you gone from your computer with SSDs and used one without them? It is PAINFUL. For the price of a boot SSD (60G say) – I would put this on my need list rather than want. And don’t get sucked in by the drives with SSD cache – just tested a few and hugely disappointed with the results.
Just to clear things up the computer won’t be in a super cool spot in the house i was hoping that with that being said i’d pick up a water cooler in hopes that durning the summer the CPU stays cool and quite this is my first Intel build i normally build AMD systems so i know how Intel is quality i know with my current build i have which is…
AMD FX-8350 Vishera 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor
ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory
MSI N650-MD1GD5/OC GeForce GTX 650 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom
TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5″ Internal Hard Drive COUGAR Solution Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with 12cm COUGAR TURBINE HYPER-SPIN Bearing Silent Fan
The stock CPU Fan is really loud on this AMD CPU so to protect my parents investment i decided to go with a water cooler I did make a slight change to the order so here it is..
I thought you might have stuck with AMD and built a little brother to your big one..
An A10-5870k APU will give better graphics than the Intels and an equivalent CPU performance to a good i3.

I honestly was thinking about it but i figured i’d try an Intel build out just to see what all the hype is about.
The one thing i don’t think about my my build is which is the AMD build i showed is the CPU runs hot never had this problem i don’t recall with my 1100T but this Eight core with the stock fan is not good lucky for me im getting $50 free from newegg for my parents build so with that $50 im getting back im buy another cooler.
The stock fan is kinda loud without my AC Unit on to cool the room down.
Almost missed the part of “building my parents”. So, in my opinion, you should go with the $74 AMD APU A6-3650; its a quad core 2.6GHz with Radeon HD 6530 graphics.:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103943
I bought my friend a laptop with the AMD APU 6-4400m and a 1600×900 17.3″ screen and the cpu had no problems running my games on it when I visit and I doubt your parents are going to need even that much. Couple that with the highest rated (on newegg) FM1 motherboard from MSI for $47:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130641
Right there you have saved $135
Throw in a combo dvd-rw/bluray reader for as low as $50 for an LG model, I have been using the style (black with silver strip) LG Bluray burner for nearly 3 years and have had no problems with it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136252
You still have $85 to play around with; I would suggest a card reader and maybe putting the remaining money into a case that your parents would smile and think “my wonderful son has made such a beautiful thing for us”; something they would be pround to show off.
I personally don’t like cases with doors but the NZXT Phantom 410’s look quite nice and come in a variety of colors/accents. They run $80 on sale at the moment ($8 shipping)
I agree with your decision for the self contained cooling solution. I used to live without air conditioning and sometimes, even with skylights open and the side pa off the case with a fan blowing in I couldn’t play games. My room temperature would stay as much as 100f til past midnight ( i solved this by moving into the basement for summers).
Anyways, I hope my opinions have helped, good luck.
BTW, good thinking on choosing newegg
I honestly don’t see the point in my parents needing a bluray player in there computer there not going to sit at there computer watching movies on it when they have there HDTV’s in there room they only needed it to burn movies and music and print out stuff.
I know its abit over kill but i was wanting to buy them something with quality and reliability i kinda realize that the Intel i5 is some what out dated but i figured with the reviews on the CPU and motherboard it was all good reviews.
My parents always end up with crappy stuff i wanted to build them something thats going to last and i my view if its overkill then thats a plus.
