Windows OS for server computer

You would like an Windows OS for a server, is that it?
It really depends on what you’re going to do with the server. For starting, create a local domain, exchange server, IIS, DNS, DHCP … I would recommend Windows Small Business Server. It has all the basic functionalities and has wizards for almost every task (it was created to target small business who can’t really afford to have an IT on site 24/7).
Between Windows SBS 2003 \ 2008 it really depends of you.
The 2008 version has great improvements on areas such virtualization, web oriented solutions (starting in IIS7), networking (native support to IPv6), backup (moved from ntbackup to shadow copies), etc, etc, etc.
Yet, if you intend to use some old applications or are used to administer a 2000/2003 version, you should stick to Windows Small Business Server 2003. It’s lifetime isn’t over and it keeps receiving updates from Microsoft.
It really depends on what you intend to do with the server.
