You can try rolling back some settings as far as you can, cleaning out some cache and cleaning up the registry.
what settings do you mean to roll back and how do i do it
check your windows update history… check whether is there any error installing some of the updates.. if there is some errors install them…
You could try installing the full standalone SP1 from Microsoft.

i have and it still does the same error wont install past configuring updates and rolls back
I would recommend checking back on your previous updates and making sure that they all installed correctly. That’s a big issue at times.
…what error?
Yeah, knowing the error and what it says would be helpful as well.
ok guys i,ll try and install again and get back with the error
Thanks!
If you can get us the error, then we will be better suited to help you out!
Clean your HDD using CCleaner
Boot to safe mode and then try installing SP1
i,ll try in safe mode thanks
otherwise all i get is this error
element not found ( ERROR-NOT-FOUND) (0x80070490) does anyone know what it means

Have you ran a Check Disk scan? That will check your disk for errors, and fix any that come up. This may be whats causing it.
To do this you go to Start –> Run –> type “chkdsk (it should show up in the menu as you begin typing) –> right click and select “Run as Admin”
Follow the instructions from there. If you have any problems, follow this Microsoft tutorial http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
Maybe is better to install windows with SP, than SP on already installed windows.
As example, i do not install updates because i always having some problem if i leave updates on for DL – this is maybe weird but i will waiting for Windows 7 with SP2 like as i was waiting for W7 with SP1…..
SOLVED thanks guys i did a clean install of windows 7 and its all good now this is solved thanks again
