Windows 7 Help

Hi, i currently have windows xp, and have had it for a while, lately computers running a bit slow and what not and im thinking of re-installing, now.. should i do this with windows xp or 7?
also is this a good idea? wow im so behind theres a windows 8, should i go with this? it looks more like xp which i would like, but is it compatible with all programs and such
and if i go wit 7 should i go with 64 or 86?
my computer specs:
intel (r) core ™2 duo CPU e8400 @ 3.00GHZ
2.99GB of ram ( actually 4 inside the pc )
nvidia geforce 9400 GT 512MB
Also, can somebody link me to the best link on here to install this, one that will install ALL my drivers and everything, and if theres any more information you need please let me know, thank you very much.

If its running slow on xp I wouldn’t update it, if you were happy with itmid reinstall a clean copy unless you really wanna update

You have a 10 year old os installed on this computer why ?
Go with Windows 8 Enterprise X64

XP is not supported anymore, no more updates. try WIN7 64 bit. it’s vastly improved over XP. and you can make it have the classic XP look. win7 is required for DX11 programs and many of the newer programs.

yeah i was thinking windows 7, i dont like the look of 8 actually.
but will my system handle 64 bit fine?

2.99GB of ram ( actually 4 inside the pc ) what does that mean? is your pc a 32 bit or 64 bit thats the main thing

32 i believe, it dosnt say 64 in computer properties, but i think my processor can handle 64.
i have 4 gigs of ram in my computer? how dont u get that lol, xp can only run 3 of it though

Also get the Windows Loader he has there, so you can activate it after it is installed and working…

My wife has the same processor but with a Nvidia 8800 gts and is running Windows 7 64 bit very well.

i burned it , just havnt decided to burn it yet, need to know if i need the sp1 at the bottom of the page, and i take it i put the activator on a usb or something

okay i plan to install sp1 ultimate, now will i have to install any of my drivers, or will this do it ?

Looks like the first version you downloaded has a service pack that you have to install afterwards.
So you would be best off doing the second, like you said, complete with SP1 version.
Windows should have most drivers OK. If you need anymore, go to your mobo manufacturers support site and Nvidia for graphics drivers..

ED: U can make Win 7 install where u want to.. Just change the settings.. is right too… Some programs need 32 bit to run as he said..

well, im installed, windows 7 is working smoothly, even got the taskbar set up just like xp, but now my problem is all my files are saving to program files X86, instead of program files, can somebody please explain this, it would be neat to be able to serach through it in the start menu, but all of them are saved in x86 so dont show up.

Clearly you’ve installed the 64bit version. The 64bit version is backwards compatible
with 32bit applications, And when you install a 32bit app, It goes into the x86 PF folder, Only when
you install a 64bit app, It goes into the standard PF folder. Hope that explains it. As far as the search goes, That certainly shouldn’t happen, Maybe your doing something wrong. It’d help

To the OP – you only need to install the 32 bit (x86) version as you only have 4GB of RAM. You don’t specify which mobo you have to see if you can upgrade to more RAM for 64 bit.

it’s actually april 8, 2014 but why use XP when the cutoff date is so close? http://blogs.technet.com/b/gladiatormsft/archive/2012/07/30/how-med-v-affects-windows-xp-end-of-life-support-policy-it-doesn-t.aspx as far as 64 bit goes on win 7, it’s an advantage, as 64 bit programs can be run, as well as 32 bit.
