its a small container, many people use it because you can have GREAT High Quality in such a small file!
Yeah it’s just the same file simply contained without any loss of quality. And if there was any loss of quality it would be barely noticed.
In short its because the ~flame removed-~ are incompetent chimps, H.264 is happy inside mainstream containers.

Wrong, because its flexible with various sound and video formats and many more stuff and that you only usually get in DVDs, such as menus and subbing in one file.

And mainstream containers can host multiple streams and obsolete codecs too, Theres no rational logic behind it, Its just moronic.

It’s just a container in which you can put media streams, nothing more nothing less
fails as always by posting the dam pic in every topic that has something to do with mkv
Answer #9

Is .mkv (Matroska) supposed to be like a Blu Ray quality release?
MKV is a container which can have Blu-Ray type codecs and seems to be the current choice for ripping Blu-Ray AVI can use most of those codecs as well but lacks some flexibility offered by MKV
think MKV got popular as a way to tell diff encodings apart
AVI = divx/xvid
MKV = H.264/X.264
from what I understand MKV supports the widest array of audio formats
and I find MP4/quicktime to restrictive and it’s time coding sucks, crappy FF, slo-mo & rewind

Its a rubbish obsolete container
MP4 is older than MKV and is not open source, you have to pay to use it (not here of course)
that’s why ripper/uploaders/scene guys use MKV
it’ the same reason they use xvid instead of divx
MKV was created as a more flexible, open source version of MP4
Answer #12
Oh please if you want to use obsulete codecs you can use mpg, Dont try to rewrite history and claim that these chimps knew what they were doing. Its rediculious to claim that you need to pay to use a container .
Its just another example of the complete incompidence of the scene like double extraction.

Gee wizz did you ever think of just sticking with a transport stream container
Answer #13
The reason MKV is such a popular conrtainer is that you can put practically any video, audio, and subtitle format in it whereas other containers like avi, divx, mp4 are not compatible with certain video and audio formats. For instance, the MP4 container won’t play 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 AC3 and DTS audio. MKV on the other hand will play practically any audio or video stream you throw at it.
Answer #14
mkv is uaually used for release groups that release 720p/1080p videos and they want it to be as small as possbiel so thats why the use mkv
Answer #15
but the bad thing about mkv is if u hyave a laggy pc and a crap program to play mkv files then u have got yourself a problem
Answer #16
Its rediculious (ridiculous) to claim that you need to pay to use a container .
so I take it your not familiar with the WMV/WMA container either, another usless format, that has licensing fees
and talking using it for “paid for” content in MP4 format
Its just another example of the complete incompetence (incompetence) of the scene like double extraction.
that’s uploaders that are to “time constrained” (being kind, try it some time) to extract & rar one file
and using normal compression to boot
the scene does not double rar and uses “store” (non-compressed) level of compression
on this point we agree, double extractions are lame and not scene compliant and if it weren’t for “the scene” we would not have any files to debate
but the bad thing about mkv is if u hyave a laggy pc and a crap program to play mkv files then u have got yourself a problem
that’s a codec (H/x.264) problem, not a container (MKV) problem
MP4 - The MPEG-4 file format specification was created on the basis of the QuickTime format specification published in 2001.
MKV - The project was announced on 6 December 2002
from

so it looks like MP4 is the older container
