Now its Up to You..
I prefer Media Player Classic but a lot of people like VLC

IMO i would say VLC Media Player… and VLC has it’s own codecs so you do not need to download any codecs… and it can also play all the files you mentioned
Thank u all for suggesting
The KMPlayer Or Daum PotPlayer
VLC player is best for mkv

At times, I find VLC framing when playing HD movies. Could be because of my outdated graphics card.
Hoever, smooth sailing with K-lite codec pack.
I use Media Player Classic/Home Cinema mainly with ffdshow tryouts and Matroska splitter which is the important one when playing MKV files on any Directshow media player.
MPC/HC does most things well.
I also use KMPlayer but mainly for taking screen caps as it can save/output screens from Anamorphic videos correctly and not output the encoded resolution which is important for Anamorphic releases.
KMPlayer has built in codecs so doesn’t require any additional ones. Pot player is by the same person/people as KMPlayer but so far it hasn’t replaced KMPlayer for me.
I don’t use codec packs because they are unnecessary for general use and just bloat the system and can cause problems.
MPC-HC under CCCP + CoreAVC
