September 22nd, 2013
I will only use it for 4×6 or 5×7 photos occasionally for photos.
Should be AIO.

Make sure you choose a printer that you can get cheap cartridges for on Ebay
@astroboy: I guess you mean printers specifically for photos; they’re a little different than an inkjet or laser.
For general documents/letters, I use a cheap b&w laser printer, which is better for text than an inkjet but rubbish for any images; printing them like half-tone newsprint.
For photos, my ex-boss gave me a Sagem PhotoEasy 155 for free. He had Vista and there are no drivers beyond XP for the thing. A result of this is you can find these sorts of printers cheap on eBay. PhotoEasy 260 was the latest one I found.
As I have Win7 Ultimate, I have the XP virtual machine included, so I simply installed the driver to that and drag my pics from my Win7 desktop to the XP desktop and then print them from XP.
I got 120 4*6 prints (3 cartridges * 40 prints each, with ribbon built in to each cartridge) for around £40. The prints have a layout on their reverse so you can use your own photos as postcards. It’s a nice little touch.
For a crummy free machine it makes nice prints; IMO it’s better than many inkjets and less hassle because there is no ink. Just make sure you have facility to run XP or a virtual XP environment if you want to take advantage of picking one of these up cheap.
I use a dedicated printer for photo’s, you will get crappy results from AIO’s not to much on 10x15cm etc but certainly A4.
You can often pick up second hand ones or ex-display models cheap. The reason they are better is the ink quality is far superior, and most use 4 cartridges, one being grey photo.
