What on earth is a steam account?

Can somebody pleas clearly explain to me what you can do with a steam account? I’ve heard a lot about it, but even wikipedia can’t tell me

Not much…You can make one for free…The only difference is when you buy games trough steam…They will be available for you to download and play at any time…You don’t need a CD/DVD to play and games are cheaper than buying them from the store…

a steam account is software made my Valve. You can download games off it some free others for some of your $$$ (all are legit). You can play over the net with that since it can list servers for almost all games
