hi all,
I have decided to start making some websites that i will upload to a web sever i will make. What i need to know is how do i update a website without having to take it down????? i think it may have something to do with a platform, but im not sure if thats true or what a platform is.
many thanks,
J

Build the files in the normal way, then use an FTP client (Filezilla) to send the updated files to the server using an overwrite command. These will immediately replace the old files. A Ctrl&F5 function may need to be performed to show them.
Answer #2
okay thanks, how do i get/use a overwrite command??
Answer #3
Do you know how to upload with Filezilla?
If not, basically once you have uploaded your “first draft” of the site, every time you edit and save the local file when you drag n drop this to the server in FZ it will ask you if you wish to overwrite, overwrite if newer, etc etc. Simply choose yes, and it will immediately replace the original with the new version.
Answer #4
any that will not take down the site at all, the reason i ask is that if people are downloading off this site then i do not want them to get cut off when the site is updated
Answer #5
Firstly:
How are you building the site? Standard HTML and CSS?
Or do you want a BB like ?
Depending on what files you update depends on what happens.
If your server is hostong the content, so for example a RAR file that people will download, and you update the index.html homepage file then no, their download will not be affected. If you mess with the RAR then yes, it will.
If you are simply going to be updating the HTML files then you will see no loss of service PROVIDED you overwrite the existing file as opposed to deleting the current and uploading the new.
Does that make sense?
Answer #6
ok yeah that makes sense thanks for your help i really appreciate it

Hey no probs. I remember starting out with it all – it’s pretty daunting. Just remember – backup, backup, backup.
