What are your specs?..as in.. CPU, ram, type of video card or on board..?
How does it go with WMP ?….You may need to download a codec pack such as this one so WMP can play mkv..

Of all players, I like PotPlayer the best..
With that I could play HD .mkv smoothly, even on an old Pentium 4, especially if your video card supports hardware acceleration..Give it a whirl…Just use out of the box settings.

the laptop is about 4 years old and was a entry level laptop ( just from a quick google search) it may not be VLC does it play avi’s ok? i have a older laptop and It wont play mkv’s either it gets all pixelated and jitters but plays avi’s just fine. you can try pot player but i have a small low spec netbook and it struggles to play mkv’s when its hooked to tv it would stutter ever so slightly you could notice it and it would bug the crap out of you; I tried to use pot player and it didnt make a difference. VLC is the best IMO, my netbook will play avi’s fine tho.
EDIT. also if you are trying to watch a HD video to say a tv or just on your laptop. maybe MKV2VOB will help you? http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter-DIVX-Related/mkv2vob.shtml convert the mkv to a mpg with same quality may play a little better, worth a shot
