Using Flash drive for your applications

there is a way to do this- instead of traveling with your computer and its applications- somehow you can use your flash drive to use your personal and favorite applications upon other people’s computers.
how is this done? what are the pros and cons?
can anyone recommend a good flash drive?

The pros: very easy to use and very portable of course.
The cons: can be a little slower, can go corrupt if not removed from PC correctly.
