Tracking Internet Data Usage
October 7th, 2013
I have an Airtel broadband connection in India. I can download 75GB before my speed drops. I think they are not giving me what they have promised.
1 Acer laptop and 1 Macbook pro shares this connection. How do i monitor the total usage? Do i need to instal softwares on each machine?? If yes what can i use on the Windows machine and the Mac?
Thanks for your help…
Depending upon your router and whether the connection ever drops, that would be the best place to check. There is software which can track/count the internet traffic usage but that would need to be installed on both computers. The router would count all traffic from both PC’s.
If you want to monitor your internet usage DU Meter is the best software that will the do that job. It even has built in alert system tell if you go over your bandwidth.

By the way 75Gb of bandwidth would mean the amount you Download + Upload. Even if you don’t upload anything your still using small amounts of bandwidth. But yes i recommend you install du meter on your windows pc. As far as i know i don’t think there is a mac version of the software. A similar software for Mac is Net Meter.

If i could monitor data usage directly at the router it would be superb. But i have a really basic router which, i think, is not capable of much. I have a Beetle 450TC1. Its a ADSL2+router.

I didn’t manage to instal any cracked version of DU Meter on the PC. I’ll give it a try once more.
As for Net Meter, couldn’t find it anywhere. I even searched in MacUpdate.com, a site that documents mac softwares.
do u have a Mac or a PC? or Both?
:S
I have a MAC and a PC sharing an internet connection.
Thanks vishnubabu i installed SurplusMeter on my mac. The software seems very comprehensive. I have to run it for a month and see how useful it is.
On my PC i installed NetStat Live. It is slightly confusing and doesn’t let me choose the billing cycle.
The Airtel site is crap. My brother seems to have lost the password and the password retrieval in the site doesn’t work well.
