Thai subtitles display incorrectly

Iv just found some subtitles for Indiana jones and temple of doom, but when i open them in VLC or DiVX player they dont display correctly. They seem a mix of strange characters with some english letters all mixed up. Is it possible this could be because I dont have the correct font on my PC that the subs where made in? I do have Thia fonts and languese installed on my lappie as sometimes I types emails and use the internet in Thai, but maybe I need the exact same fonts that the subtitles on are made in? tried looking on the net for an answer. Came across a solution that mentioned opening them in note pad and re saving them using UTF-8 incoding, however this hasn’t made any difference.
I tried changing the encoding in VLC for Thia rather than english, this didn’t made any difference. The subtitles are .ssa file, named the same as the movie and in the same folder. I have also tried manually putting them into VLC, but just get the same resuslts
I have both CCCC codec pack and windows 7 codec pack installed, and I’m using windows 7.
Had a search on here, but couldnt really find a complete answer.

found a soloution to this. Open up subtitle file in Fireox, still displays odd characters. From view menu select Character Encoding, then i selected the correct one for Thai. Then the subtitles display in correct thai characters in firefox. Copy and paste it all from firefox into notebad, then save over the top of the orginal file, making sure to select UTF-8 encoding. (and make sure to save the file as a subtitle file, not a tx file!)
If any ones else is having trouble with other languages, this could also be a soloution to your problem. Just select you appropriate encoding in firefox.
