Someone is trying to pull a car insurance scam on me!

January 17th, 2014

Okay I have either a big problem or a minor one. I was parked in front of a car, I backed up to leave the parking and the car behind me started honking so I got out my car and there was like 6 inches of space and the lady is saying I hit the car because there is a scratch on it, but there isn’t a scratch on mine. My father is a professional mechanic so I exchanged insurance information anyways and told her my dad can look at it so I told my father and he said there’s suppose to be trade paint on both cars and he looked at mine and there was nothing.
Today the people showed up and the marks extend to the side of the car bumper not where it would make sense if I actually did hit it, and my dad said the marks on their car isn’t even fresh and there’s none of our paint on their car, just white marks. (this was 2 days after the incident) He assumed that I said my father would fix it when I didn’t, I said he’ll look at it, and after that and some arguing today he said he’s going to the police department (there was no police involved the day of the incident) and five minutes within following him to the police department he pulled over and said never mind he’s going to talk to his insurance agency first.
I took pictures of both cars (2 days after when he arrived to see my dad) and nothing adds up. I am unsure what to do next, do I take the pictures to my insurance agency? Ugh honestly this isn’t even worth all this stress, whatever was on their bumper is like going to the emergency room for a paper cut -_- please help guys and thanks

If you have insurance, you need to let them handle it. That is their job. They fight very hard before they pay up, and they know exactly what to do, lol.
Answer #2
Yep that’s a good advice,But on the other hand,You could pay a tall gorilla bodyguard,Dress him up in a suit & Give him a nice looking briefcase and have him pretend he’s your lawyer so he’d scare the hell out of him!

Sadly I have been through this before. I grew up where people are not very smart (redneck’s and minorities) and once got hit from a mexican lay from behind, who tried to say I backed into her. Store clerk said he saw the lady hit me, but by the time the cops got there, the store clerk changed his story, and it was my word vs hers. Insurance company battled it out and won.
Also, once I was going through an intersection, double wide one turning left onto the highway, and the lady in front of me slams on her breaks in the middle of the intersection cuz the light turned yellow (some german lady), and I hit her from behind. Should have been my fault (cuz of the behind thing), but insurance company battled it out, and I won that one too.

thanks for the response guys! I’m going first thing tomorrow to my insurance agency with all the photos. Should I file a police report too?

If you have already left the scene, there is no point to call the police. This should always be done right away, before you leave. Just take everything you got to your insurance company, they will do the rest.

yes you should place a police report and tell them everything that you remember and also give them the pictures as well

okay I have a complication, the car is insured but my name isnt on the insurance, only my dad is meaning he doesn’t have me under his name. I’ve been told that shouldn’t matter because the car is still under insurance and my dad gave me personal permission to drive it. Would this be a problem with the cops?

This is not entirely true in the US. I can’t get into details, because I am not 100% sure of them, this is another matter you need to talk to your insurance company about, they will know…
But its definitely going to cause some problems, lol.

Okay I talked to my dad and he said something about being a household thing, like since I’m his dependent and I’m an occasional driver our insurance is fine with it. Its been a whole day since they came this morning and the bastards haven’t called or anything, I’m not taking the risk of letting it die down but I’m hoping they are backing off.

That’s kinda bigoted, don’t you think?
Answer #12
If the idiots annoy you again, tell them it’s been reported to the insurance company and the police as a scam

Okay so we went to our insurance agency and told them the story and gave them the photos and there taking it as a heads up if they do come and try to file a claim. However its been almost a whole day and they haven’t called or showed up to my house since yesterday morning when they said their going to talk to their insurance agency. I’m hoping they realize I’m too much trouble for them to try to rip off.

So guys what do you think? Its been two days, no word from the scammers and no calls from their or my insurance agency. I should have heard something by now right? I’m hoping its been dropped! I just wanna stop stressing lol

I think it’s pretty obvious they thought your an easy target but later on realized you aren’t so they backed off.
Doubt you’ll be hearing from em again,But in the unlikely event that you will,They got nothing to prove
their case,So one way or other your in the clear,You got nothing to worry about.
