[SOLVED]Unlocking selections in Microsoft Word

November 19th, 2016

I am having some trouble with Office 2007. Every time I try to edit certain documents this message is shown: “This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked”
If anyone knows how I might unlock a selection I would appreciate it, thank you.

Answer #1
which version of office do you have?
Answer #2
Office Professional 2007 and I am running Vista Ultimate
Answer #3
i know for a fact that the enterprise edition, which i have used for the past months works. i think this should work for you.
1. Close all Microsoft Office applications.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration
Note You may also find another subkey that resembles the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}
4. If you find additional subkeys that reference Microsoft 12.0 registration, open each subkey, and then identify the product by the ProductName entry.
For example: ProductName=Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007
5. When you find the subkey for the product from which you want to remove the existing product license key, delete the following entries:
* DigitalProductID
* ProductID
6. Exit Registry Editor.
After u are finished with this...
1. Go to start and Click Run...
2. In the run box type... "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en"
3. You should now see a file named Proof.XML
4. Right click the file and select open with notepad.
5. After opening the file with notepad scroll down to the the bottom.
6. You should see lines like this...
7. </Feature>
<Feature Id="SetupXmlFiles" Cost="1248">
<OptionRef Id="AlwaysInstalled"/>
</Feature>
8. Just change the line AlwaysInstalled with neverInstalled retaining the quotes...
9. Save the file and u are ready to go...
10. Now just open Word and it should not ask you for any activation...
11. Make sure you do not do any kind of update...

I did this originally. I am able to create my own documents without any problems. The problem is, when I am trying to edit a document that I have downloaded form rapidshare, I am not allowed because the document is locked.
Answer #5
have you activated you office 2007?
Answer #6
yes, as soon as I downloaded it I performed the process you described above…
Answer #7
you might be sol.
your best bet may be to download the enterprise edition.
if anyone has got the pro version to work maybe they can help. im out of ideas.
Answer #8
I guess I’ll download enterprise then…
Answer #9
Just a thought:
Some of the protections built into vista might be reponsible. When the d/l file is saved to hdd, immediately right click it and in properties and on one of the tabs there may be a box marked unblock( I think) together with words to effect that this has been d/l from an unknown(?) source. Tick or untick the box and you can use it as normal I hope!!
Sorry if this does’nt help, but it sounds similar to something which kept happening to me – its quick to verify.
