[Solved] Trouble with external hard drive

November 8th, 2013

Hello,
I have an external hard drive that I use to store my bluray rips. There are 240Gb worth of movies on it. When I hook up the drive to my EMTEC Media Player I can browse through all the movies. Yet when I hook it up to a laptop or a desktop pc I only see 8 movies there. Can anybody tell me where the rest has gone?
The laptop uses Windows 7 and the desktop pc has Windows XP on it!
Thanks kind folks!

Answer #1
You should be able to see them, what format files are they ?
Run CHKDSK on the external. When it’s connected, right click on the drive in explorer > properties > tools > error-checking
Answer #2
They are all .mkv
Running CHKDSK right now, sure takes a long time…
Answer #3
Well, that didn’t help, still don’t see my files.
Anyone who’s got a bright idea that might help?!
Answer #4
Have you checked to see that the files are not “hidden”
windows explorer (on the external) > tools > folder options > view – check “show hidden files and folders” > apply > OK
Check you have ownership of the files
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
Win 7
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753659.aspx
Also – take a look at Disk Management, and see what it’s showing for the drive
start > run > diskmgmt.msc

Hell & damnation… How could I have been SO stupid?! Have been using Windows since version 3.1 AND I DID NOT THINK OF THIS!!!

Well thanks for reminding me, if I would want to make an ass out of myself in public again I’ll let all of you know

Don’t worry about it.
I should have suggested that in the first place, but I naturally assumed you would have done that already
can you edit the topic title to include [solved] if you have got it sorted now
Answer #7
Well that’s interesting..Would not have thought that some of the files would have been hidden !

Sometimes it happens with externals, especially when they are not shut down correctly, eg. when used via a media player.
At least he knows his file system is OK having run CHKDSK
