[SOLVED] How to burn a DVD for TV by a normal DVD player

I have a question about burning a DVD that is playable on TV from a normal DVD-player (so not a player in a PC).
Often there are videos posted, and in the reference it says something like HDDVD or BlueRay. These are in .mkv, .avi, .mp4 or whatever.
My question is, can you burn these resulting files to DVD and then play them on a normal DVD-player that is connected to a TV?
If yes, how?
I tried one of these videos a while ago, and it did not work.
I use Nero 8 to burn DVD’s and a have a Dual Layer DVD burner.
I am not very familiar with movies, DVD’s and all that goes with it, so please do not overestimate my knowledge in your reply ….. Thanks in advance for any help.
