[SOLVED] 2 problems with graphics upgrade
August 5th, 2016
I setup a computer system for a friend, AMD based. Ive only ever used/built Intel based
Motherboard Gigabyte G1-SNIPER-A88X FM2+, AMD A88X, 4DDR3 2133, RADEON, PCIE3.0, GLAN, RAID, HDMI, DVI, VGA,
CPU
AMD A10-7850K BLK Ed FM2+ 3.7GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) 4MB 95W Radeon R7 Series
It has 8GB ram. My question is related to him wanting to put in a standalone graphics card, I have no idea why. I was sure this would play the latest games.
After a short period of reading I am non the wiser except for the fact it says adding a new Graphics card, it should be an Radeon. But which one?
Budget is aprox $250 AU
2nd Issue. Totally unrelated to the above.
How the hell does one understand which Graphics cards are the latest? Is there a hierarchy somewhere? Numbers are all over the place.
I was looking at some new Geforce cards for myself and I am honestly totally lost.
Please help this old fart.
Regards.
Built in graphics card are not really for gaming..They might handle light games..
You don’t have to use Radeon..Nvidia can be just as good..Not going to start a debate..
As which graphics card..Well that depends on your budget..The more you spend the more powerful is the card..
OK cheers .
So if I just went ahead and bought him a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 Ti WindForce 2GB Video Card, it should be good to go for the next 12 months of gaming?
And in relation to the hierarchy of Card numbers, can I just assume, for example a Geforce 222xxx is better than a Geforce 111.xxx due to the higher value.
I know it seems a dumb question but so many cards these days.
Thanks again
(PS)
I only ever owned 1 radeon card, I didnt like it.
GTX 750 should be good to go..I have a GTX 660 and can run most games on high settings..
Thanks again. truly appreciated.

The benchmark tab gives performance comparisons for most components, just a guide.
As for understanding the ranges of GCards – for NVidia…
GT XYZ:
(GTX = mobile) (GT = desktop) Generally the mobile version is weaker than the same desktop version (not always by much).
X** = major range version – 9** is better than 8** is better than 7** (sometimes not by much though)
*YZ = subversion inside the main range, higher is better – 880 is better than 860 is better than 840.
+-+-+-+-+-+-+
The general idea for upgrades is to go for TWO number changes.
Either one version and a subversion (or two) – 540 to 670, for example
OR
A full two main versions – 540 to 740
Sometimes it’s worth going for a subversion change… but only from a very low number to a very high one – 520 to a 570 is a good change… 560 to 570 isn’t.
I’m not sure how it goes with ATI/AMD cards – they do seem to be all over the place.
Check the benchmark tab on the site I posted above, it rates them in order of performance.
GTX, GT, GTS etc are branding names for Nvidia Cards generally you can ignore them… GTX is not necessarily mobile
an M at the end of the name for example geforce gtx 660M indicates mobile devices.
you marked as solved but amd r7 265 is better than 750 ti in terms of performance and also cheaper , it is best lower tier card currently. buying 750ti would be a mistake.

you can see overall performances at here as well as per game.

you are right bro.But nvidia boasts their power efficiency with the 750 ti.It takes power from the board and no external power connectors from smps needed silent card too…

i have no doubt nvidia’s technology is better , especially latest maxwell architecture which 750 ti also part of as well as i own a gtx 980. but in lower tier when people are trying to play games as long as possible with a smooth fps. performance becomes more important for the most than the power things. nvidia gpu’s also tend to be quiter but a good custom cooler from a brand can make amd gpu’s silent also , for example asus’ strix.

Thanks for the info bro.I didn’t knew we could reduce the gpu sound with a custom cooler. My friend had been complaining for a long time abt this problem. He has a 6770 radeon(asus) and the sound is like an aeroplane .I would recommend it to him
if it is reference design which is made by amd itself , they are always noisy and have more heat , a custom cooler is always better. and recently most brands started to use 0db fans also fans are not activated until gpu comes to a specific load or specific temperature which can all be adjusted with a third party software. among all those new 0db custom coolers asus’ strix technology seems best to me but it doesnt mean others are not good enough.
as a result , noise and temperature problems can be minimized with current custom cooler technologies but for power consumption , there is nothing you can do since it solely depends on gpu technology itself.
Please don’t turn this topic to AMD vs Nvidia debate!!!!
Not being funny or anything but the 750ti is a very poor card imo.
You can get better for probably the same price.
If you look at benches, the 660ti pisses all over it.
